What is Ice Driving USA?
Ice Driving USA is a premier winter driving school located on Dollar Lake in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Participants have the opportunity to drive brand-new Subaru vehicles equipped with specially designed studded tires from Sweden, all under the guidance of professional coaches.
Where is it based?
Ice Driving USA is hosted at the Chanticleer Inn, conveniently situated adjacent to Dollar Lake. The inn serves as the central hub for all activities, including morning registration, post-drive gatherings, and overnight lodging options. For more information, visit the Chanticleer Inn.
Who runs it?
This unique program is a collaboration between DirtFish Rally School and Patrik Sandell, the creator of Ice Driving USA. Patrik began his driving career on the icy roads of Sweden, won the 2006 Junior World Rally Championship, and has since become a renowned rallycross driver.
Professional instructors from DirtFish Rally School primarily teach courses, the leading rally driving school in the U.S. Based in Washington, DirtFish has trained many top rally stars and operates a successful rally and rallycross racing program.
When is it available?
Ice Driving USA runs annually from early February to early March. If these dates don’t align with your schedule, consider joining DirtFish Rally School, which offers programs year-round.
What do I need to participate?
Participants must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license. For any special requests, please get in touch with us.
What vehicles will I be driving?
You’ll have access to a brand-new Subaru WRX, known for its all-wheel drive capabilities. Various automatic and manual transmission vehicles will be available, allowing everyone the chance to experience each model. All vehicles are fitted with specially studded tires for optimal performance on ice.
What kinds of courses are offered?
Ice Driving USA offers one-day and two-day programs. The one-day experience covers the basics of ice driving, while the multi-day courses introduce more complex techniques and traditional rallying elements like pace notes. All classes include essential vehicle safety training and conclude with joyrides around Dollar Lake with instructors and professional drivers. How much driving time can I expect?
Participants will enjoy as much driving time as possible! We keep classroom instruction to a minimum, allowing you to spend more time behind the wheel honing your ice driving skills.
What’s included in the course fee?
Lunch is provided as part of your booking fee, along with multiple coffee breaks and special gifts. Please note that breakfast, dinner, and overnight lodging are not included.
How can I sign up?
To register, visit the “Driving Programs” section of the Ice Driving USA website, where you will be redirected to the appropriate booking pages. All bookings are handled through DirtFish Rally School.
What if I need to modify or cancel my reservation?

What should I bring?
First and foremost, bring your enthusiasm to learn and have fun! Dress warmly, as you’ll be spending time on the ice. If you’d like to capture your experience, consider bringing your own cameras and mounts.
Can I expect to see any celebrities?
You never know who might show up! Last year, Patrik’s former Subaru Rally Team USA teammates, including Travis Pastrana, David Higgins, and Chris Atkinson, made appearances. Nitro Circus stars Jolene Van Vugt, Blake “Bilko” Williams, and Street Bike Tommy were also in attendance, along with legendary snowmobile daredevil Larry Enticer. While we can’t guarantee specific personalities, you’ll be surrounded by talented instructors and fellow enthusiasts.

Eagle River, known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World,” offers a variety of exciting winter activities. We’re happy to assist you if you’d like to extend your stay at the Chanticleer Inn.
